We are hearing from members and non-members who are receiving fraudulent text alerts which look like they are coming from MEFCU. If you receive one of these, please do not click on the links. This is a scam and is not from the credit union.
Scammers are targeting random phone numbers. MEFCU data has not been compromised.
Any text messages coming from the Credit Union (Online Banking, or Card Alerts) will not contain a link to tap on. In addition, the phone number that it comes from will not be a full 10-digit number, but rather will be a 6 digit short code.
These malicious messages continue to change in content, but all share common themes. These scams attempt to get the recipient to click on a text or link in some capacity. This link then brings you to a “fake” MEFCU website, where it asks you to enter your member number, phone, and e-mail address. Once a user logs in on this fraudulent website, the scammers then collect your log in credentials.
If you have clicked the link, call our member support center at 1-800-535-2129 right away so we can assist you in securing your accounts.
If you receive a suspicious message the best thing to do is delete it and report it as “Junk” or “Spam.”
- On an iPhone, swipe left on the message and select "Delete", then select "Delete and Report Junk."
- On an Android, press and hold the message and select “Block and report spam.” Doing this will prompt the carrier to block the number the text is coming from.
- You can also report junk text by forwarding the message to 7726 (SPAM). All major wire carriers will accept these messages and investigate them further. Be cautious when forwarding messages and avoid clicking the links.
