Equifax Breach

On September 7, Equifax announced a data breach that occurred between May and July of this year. The breach could potentially affect as many as 143 million U.S. consumers. As your financial institution, we want to make sure that you are aware of the Equifax security incident so that you can take steps to protect yourself.

What you can do related to this breach:

  • Determine if your information has been compromised.  Equifax has established a dedicated website, equifaxsecurity2017.com, for consumers to determine if their information was potentially impacted by this incident. Consumers can also apply for 12 months of free credit monitoring.
  • Contact Equifax with questions. Equifax has established a dedicated call center which is available every day from 7:00 a.m. - 1:00 a.m. (Eastern time) at 866-447-7559
  • Beware of piggy-back scams; such as phishing and vishing (emails and calls) from scammers reporting to be from Equifax or your financial institution that are using this breach and exploiting you to release information.  Never give personal information when you have been called unless you can verify the legitimacy of the call.  If you have concerns, hang up and call a number you know to be correct to verify the call.

Other ways you can protect your personal information:

  • Be vigilant in reviewing account statements and credit reports.
    • Take note of small, but suspicious charges. Thieves may charge small amounts to see if account holders notice, and if not, they will continue using the card.
  • Report any unauthorized activity on their accounts to MEFCU or other financial institutions.
  • Monitor your personal information.
  • Obtain a free copy of your credit report from the three major credit bureaus: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. These are available at annualcreditreport.com
  • Members should contact the local law enforcement agency if you believe your information has been used in some way.
  • Enroll in an Identity Theft protection service such as LifeLock (www.lifelock.com).  MEFCU has a partnership with LifeLock and MEFCU members receive a 10% discount off any plan purchased.  Simply use the promo code: MEFCU at checkout to receive the discount.
